The bustling town of Athenry, also known as Baile Átha rí in Irish, is just a 25 minute drive into Galway city centre and a 15 minute drive to Oranmore.
The medieval town serves lots of character, and the history of the town can be unravelled at the Heritage centre occupying the remains of the mid-13th century St. Mary’s collegiate church adjacent to the town square. Remains of some of the original high status buildings are still one of the town’s main attractions.
Known for its world famous song ‘The fields of Athenry’, there are strong GAA teams available for all ages in the area, along with an athletics team and a lot of different facilities available at ones fingertips. The town has a large variety of primary and secondary schools with bus services available from different parts of the town. Pubs, restaurants, and shops also provide everything one would desire at ease.
From Galway city, Athenry is accessed from the M6 motorway. The train station provides frequent services for those working in neighbouring towns and cities. There is large supermarket located in the town along with lots more amenities such as pharmacies, kids boutiques, fashion shops, and a variety of coffee shops to relax in.
Athenry castle is a fantastic day out for families, with opportunity to have fun while learning about the history of the town. There is lots of creative activities such as medieval experiences, guided tours, school tours, archery, walking tours, parties and much more! The heritage centre is definitely worth a visit, a great experience learning while having fun.
